Igreja da Sé
The Sé Cathedral of Lisbon is one of the oldest buildings in the city, originally constructed in the twelfth century shortly after the reconquest of the city. The church, with its sturdy Romanesque towers, is one of the Lisbon's most iconic landmarks.
Miradouro de Santa Luzia
This romantic terrace by the church of Santa Luzia introduces visitors to Alfama with a view over its houses, churches, and the Tagus River.
Castelo de São Jorge
The Castelo de São Jorge is a medieval castle that overlooks Alfama, the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon. For centuries, the castle was the main residence of Portugal's monarchs.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol
The postcard-perfect views from this terrace above the Alfama district are truly magnificent. It's a must-photograph spot for tourists, who also usually end up sitting for a drink at the kiosk café or at the Café Portas do Sol on the terrace below.
Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte
This is one of the least visited but perhaps the most breathtaking viewpoint in Lisbon.
Together with that of the castle, this is the most complete view of the city, looking directly to the castle, the old town, and the modern districts away from the center.
Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara
All of Lisbon's viewpoints are romantic, but none more than this one, looking over all of downtown towards the castle and the river. It is a landscaped terrace with busts of historical figures, a fountain, and a kiosk café from where you can sit and admire the beauty of the city. It is also in front of the Hostel Lookout Lisbon.
Oceanário de Lisboa
Lisbon's Oceanário is a large aquarium located in the Parque das Nações (Nations' Park), the site of the World Expo of 1998. More than 15,000 fish and marine mammals can be seen here, including the ever popular sharks.
Largo de Camões
This small square is the transition zone between Chiado and Bairro Alto.
In its center is a monumental statue of 16th century epic poet Luis de Camões standing on a pedestal with other smaller statues of classical Portuguese authors.
LX Factory
A group of abandoned 19th century warehouses and factories is now Lisbon's biggest hub of creativity in the center of the city for companies related to art, fashion, advertising, design and gastronomy.
Elevador de Santa Justa
The Elevador de Santa Justa is an iron elevator built in the nineteenth century to connect the Baixa district with the higher situated Bairro Alto district. The Gothic looking elevator is one of the most popular attractions in the center of Lisbon.
Praça da Figueira
Adjacent to Rossio is Figueira Square, one of the city's main bus and tram stops, and with a great view of Castelo de São Jorge overlooking it.
Arco da Rua Augusta
Its main façade faces Praça do Comércio. It's a triumphal arch designed in 1775 as a gateway to the city, but the version seen today dates from a century later, 1875. On the side facing Rua Augusta is a monumental clock featuring naturalistic motifs.
Terreiro do Paço
"Commerce Square" was the centerpiece of the reconstruction after the earthquake of 1755 that reduced the city to rubble. Its main attraction is a monumental equestrian statue of King José I.
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
Is a monastery built in the early sixteenth century in a Portuguese variant of the Gothic style. It is considered one of Lisbon's most magnificent buildings.
Torre de Belém
Is undoubtedly Lisbon's most iconic landmark. The tower was built in the sixteenth century in the Tagus river to control the entrance to the city from the sea.
Padrão dos Descobrimentos
"The Monument to the Discoveries" was built in honor of Henry the Navigator, who was instrumental in the success of the Portuguese explorations during the fifteenth century, a period now known as the Age of Discoveries.
Bairro Alto
Here we can see a big diversity of bars and shops. It is mostly visited at night by young people and considered the nightlife center.
Museu dos Coches
Is one of the world's most important collections of historic coaches and carriages. The museum first opened in 1905 in a former horse riding school in Belém.
Rossio
Rossio square forms the bustling heart of downtown Lisbon. Several parts of the city converge here and the square is a popular meeting place.
Casino Estoril
It is the biggest casino in Europe and is located in Cascais/Estoril.
Palácio da Pena
Is an eccentric palace built in the nineteenth century for Dom Fernando II, consort of Queen Maria II of Portugal. The palace is one of several in the town of Sintra, some 40 kms from Lisbon.
Cristo Rei
This enormous monument to Christ was inspired by the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro. The 28m figure of Christ opens its arms to Lisbon, and there is a view of the city and 25 de Abril Bridge from the top of the 82m high pedestal (reached by an elevator).
